Year: 2008

A 4 days intense workshop with 40 participants held in the school of architecture in HTWK Leipzig, Germany. The workshop assignment was to create a “Light-Shading Machine”, based on parametric design and 1:1 prototype fabrication.

topic 1 “Light Collecting Machine”
Given: specific location
Goal: creation of a closed envelope that captures as much light/heat as possible and reflects it inside to produce energy (photosynthesis)
Parameters:
1st light radiation - intensity of light source
2nd orientation to light source | angle
3rd location | distance to light source
4th “individual parameter”

topic 2 “Portable Sun Protecting Machine”
Given: specific end/user
Goal: to create a perfect customized object to protect the user from the sun
Parameters:
1st maximize air flow
2nd orientation to sun | angle
3rd user specific parameter
4th “individual parameter”

topic 3 “Shading Machine”
Given: specific location or “sight”
Goal: shading machine that creates an optimum shadow (size, shape, pattern) on a secondary surface (floor, wall person)
Parameters:
1st orientation to light source
2nd size of the reference area to project on
3rd number of openings
4th “individual parameter”

topic 4 “Movement”
Given: planar surface, components 4 flexible corner points
Goal: to create a flexible device that is able to increase and decrease the amount of light passing through
Parameters:
1st orientation to light source
2nd maximal movement of flexible rectangles
3rd number of rectangles
4th “individual parameter”

List of Participants

HOUSING COMPLEX
Designed by ahylo studio
Design team: Panagiotis Lianos
Location: Mejia, Peru
Year: 2010

This research project on multi apartment housing deals with a multilevel apartment "typology" based on properties that are preserved under continuous deformations. Based on external to the geometry constrains, such as panoramic views, semicircular site shape and functionality, we develop a weaving strategy over the different apartments, to balance input benefits over the deformed geometry. Sets with certain properties are used to define a topological space consequent with convergence, connectedness, and continuity, upon transformation. Based on internal to the geometry constrains, continuous functions with a continuous inverse are generated. Architectonic values are conceptually attached to these mathematical functions, completing the generation of an architectonic variation.

HACIENDA, Speciation Vs Typology

Hacienda is an ongoing investigation into strategies of mixed use intervention in a rural territory. The particularities of the landscape, the various programmatic elements and the local real estate economy are only few of the inherent antagonisms in the definition of the design problem. This complex set of spatial and temporal forces is harvested for its singularities of momentary equilibria. Our primary aim has been the definition of a consistent design system which is able to continuously re-evaluate new inputs. A series of feedback mechanisms between current/future inputs and the existing field of forces allow for the constant forming of the system itself. It is a platform of self-organization of territorial conflicts which seeks to emphasize their emergent material character in the urban and architectural scale.
We shift from the notion of the master-plan to the logic of the master-algorithm: the conflicting force fields are analyzed and encoded into an adaptive system of local negotiation which is able to pause, re-evaluate and restart the design development of the territory as many times as needed without loosing its consistency. The algorithm has been fine-tuned to allow for the emergence of different meta - patterns (behavioral qualities) through the intrinsic tendencies of the negotiation over time.
The generative system that has been developed for the design of the building masses is conceived as an evolutionary system able of speciation. The emphasis in the architectural scale of the intervention is in the shift from the typological classification of the building masses to a different kind of consistency in the field which allows for topologically open-ended results. While all the proposed building masses share the same algorithmic principles, the logic of the subdivision of space yields highly differentiated results in terms of form, function and construction. This technique is applied across a number of scales, and choreographs their population by introducing aggregation and subdivision logics towards larger scale building units and neighborhoods. The design proposal is the result of this procedure of constant osmosis which leads to a field of territorial momentary equilibrium.

Minimal I – Sphinx is a free standing installation. Algorithmic design processes allow for the genetic growth of complex form(s), with the use of simple syntactic rules. Tension and gravity are forcing the mean curvature towards zero and the surfaces tend to become minimal. The mathematical curves are adjusted to the human body proportions, in order to welcome many different sitting positions. It is a piece of art that can function as a sitting element and remain open for any future affect.

HOUSING BLOCK
Designed by ahylo studio in collaboration with O25 Architects
Design team: Pavlos Xanthopoulos, Ioulietta Zindrou, Antonis Perpatidis, Tania Tzima, Nastazia Spyropoulou
Location: Moscow | Russia
Competition: A101 | The City Block Concept
Gross Floor Area: 15.300 sqm
Year: 2010

The housing Block is organized by using four apartment types, designed in a way that all share the same mathematical proportions and each performs as a subdivision or enclosure of the others. This four types appear in different orientations and scales. This fractal logic of the apartment distributions offers many possible rearrangements and re-subdivisions of the same building outline, and applies to all scales, from unit (apartment), to sets of units (block) and finally to the larger scale of the city (sets of blocks). As a result, local apartment arrangements generate unique housing blocks that share the same inherent design rules. From a real estate point of view, this flexibility allows for solutions of various design qualities and therefore of various budgets.
On the ground level along the highway, we propose a hard commercial boundary. The rest of the ground level keeps a semi-public character with parking spaces and gardens, oriented only for the inhabitants. Both the landscape below the apartments level and the planted terraces distributed in-between the apartments function as semi-public spaces that clearly filter the boundaries between semi-public - public and semi-public – private accordingly.
